Do you believe in a Supreme Being?
When becoming a Freemason, members are expected to be able to affirm a belief in a 'Supreme Being'. This is deliberately phrased so as to be fully inclusive and we celebrate the diverse nature of the beliefs of our members. There is no requirement to be an active practitioner of any particular religion. Whilst some Freemasons are agnostic, most generally believe in a God – be it Christian, Muslim, Sikh or Jewish etc – of some sort, even if they do not necessarily practice any particular religion.
Criminal Convictions
Freemasons are expected to conform to high standards. As a candidate, you must disclose any criminal convictions, except that you may choose whether or not to disclose a conviction if it is spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. If you have a concern on this aspect, please email us at contact@staugustines3713.org.uk and we can discuss further.

Other Things To Consider

Before considering joining St Augustine’s Lodge, you should realise that a firm commitment is necessary, primarily in the form of your time.

Time
We have six monthly meetings annually from October to April on the first Wednesday in each month, with the exception of January, most of which start at 5.30pm and some earlier. As you progress, practice nights (two prior to each Meeting) come into play and you will be expected to attend at least one.

Family
Social Events are fun and play a roll, helping you to get to know other members.

Family considerations are of great importance. Discuss at length your intentions with your wife or partner.

Talk to us
If you know a member of our Lodge, “it’s easy”. Discuss with him at length your interest and he will elaborate on what has been stated above and point you in the right direction.

If you do not know a member and express an interest in joining our ancient and honourable institution, please contact the secretary, he will be happy to give you all the help and advice that you need. He may well encourage you to attend one of our social events so that you can meet members and have an informative, informal chat.

Meet us
Once you have declared a definite interest in joining our Lodge a meeting will be arranged to discuss all the details involved, this will normally include your wife or partner, to ensure that everything is clearly explained and all parties fully understand the commitments being made, both in terms of time and financially to ensure that it will not cause any hardship or conflict in your relationship.

Next steps
A proposal will then be made to the Lodge and a ballot taken before you are contacted with a date for your initiation.

If you are already a mason and wish an adjoining membership, please contact our secretary who will be pleased to assist you.
